CICA and COMIT forge relationship to exploit opportunities for mobile IT in the AEC sector

The Construction Industry Computing Association (CICA) and Construction Opportunities for Mobile Information Technology (COMIT) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to encourage the adoption of Mobile Information Technology in the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) sector, through the development and dissemination of new best practice, cross-community experience sharing and by engaging with suppliers.
Mobile technologies promise to revolutionise the management of construction projects, but many organisations in the sector are not fully aware of the benefits and implications of deployment. The relationship between CICA and COMIT will leverage the strengths of both organisations to bring a unique offering, delivering the following benefits to members of the respective organisations and the AEC sector generally:
- Single Centre of Excellence: membership of both organisations will share in the results and benefits of any work conducted in a joint manner.
- Consolidated Knowledge: CICA and COMIT will learn from each other providing a wider test bed for projects and eliminating duplication of work.
- Leveraged funding: by selectively pooling membership investment for specific projects, the value of each organisation's investment is maximised and leveraged resources will be able to more quickly solve critical technology problems resulting in quicker development and deployment.
- Critical Mass: Working together, CICA and COMIT can more easily achieve the critical mass that is required to encourage technology companies to produce industry specific solutions and to provide integrated solutions that can be implemented in a fragmented industry.
- Networking opportunities will be expanded for both CICA and COMIT members.
The programme of joint activity will be initiated by the establishment of CICA's Mobile Technologies Knowledge Network.

About COMIT
COMIT was launched in the autumn of 2002 by Arup, Loughborough University and Building Services Research and Information Association (BSRIA) in response to an invitation by the United Kingdom Department of Trade and Industry (DTI). The DTI provided only seed funding and the project has now become self-financing. COMIT’s charter is research, discovery and field trials of mobile IT opportunities in the Construction Industry in the United Kingdom and secondary focus in the European Community.
